When to Start Pumping Breast Milk Before Returning to Work & How to Calculate the Amount of Milk Stash Needed

When to Start Pumping Breast Milk Before Returning to Work

-When to start pumping: If you are nursing your baby directly, start pumping 2-4 weeks before going back to work.

-Frequency: If you are nursing your baby directly, plan to pump between breastfeeding sessions 2-3 times daily.

-Duration: Each pumping session typically lasts 10-15 minutes or more, depending on when let-down occurs until the breasts are emptied.

-Best Time for Milk Production: Best time to pump is in the morning which can help you produce the most amount of milk. Research shows that the peak of milk production occurs during the early morning hours when hormones are at its highest, typically between 2 and 5 AM. On the other hand, hormone levels tend to be at their lowest in the late afternoon and early evening.

-Milk Produced: The amount of milk produced per session can range from 0.5oz to 3oz, influenced by various factors.

How to Calculate the Amount of Milk Stash Needed

-Milk Stash Calculation: Depending how old your baby is and how much they feed, the amount can vary. But, the general rule for the milk stash is 1 ounce for every hour away from your baby.

-Milk Stash Amount: Aim for a total stash lasting 3-5 days before you return to work. If you work 8 hours in the day, aim for for a milk stash of 24 - 35oz.

*If you are concerned about over producing milk supply, consider pumping for a shorter duration or a smaller quantity each day instead of a full session.
